Pool Overview
Dive into fun at the Rec Center Pool! Our main pool features a 25-yard, six-lane layout, ideal for lap swimming, recreational swims, swimming lessons, and water aerobics. With depths ranging from 3 1/2 to 6 feet and an average temperature of 84 degrees, it’s perfect for swimmers of all levels.
The wading pool, designed for young children and their parents, offers a safe environment with depths of 2 to 2 1/2 feet and a cozy 94-degree average temperature.
After a swim or workout, unwind in our hot tub, accommodating up to 10 people at a relaxing 104 degrees.

Swim & Play
Lap Pool
Our main pool is a 25 yard, six-lane pool that is used for lap swimming, rec swims, swimming lessons, and water aerobics classes. The minimum depth is 3 1/2′ maximum depth is 6′.

Wading Pool
Our wading pool is designed for younger children and their parents and is used for rec swims and swimming lessons. The minimum depth is 2′, and the maximum depth is 2 1/2′

Hot Tub
Our hot tub accommodates up to 10 people.

Group Swim Lessons
Make a splash in swimming lessons at the Evanston Rec Center! We offer American Red Cross lessons for all ages, starting from infants 6 months to 3 years, children 4 years and up, and even adults. Our program includes 10 levels of instruction, ensuring that everyone from beginners to advanced swimmers can improve their skills. Join us to build confidence, enhance safety, and enjoy the water with our expert-led swimming lessons.
$5 Discount if paid by the Thursday before classes begin.
NOTES TO PARENTS: We DO NOT guarantee that every child will pass every level every time. You should reasonably expect your child to repeat most levels several times. Children will only be passed to the next level when they consistently demonstrate all skills of their current level.
Any class that does not have a minimum of 4 students may be canceled. If a class is canceled a credit will be placed on your Rec Center Account.
All spectators are asked to remain in the designated spectator area during swim lessons.

Parent - Child Class
6 Months to 3 Years Old
Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills. All levels require a parent or other caregiver to accompany the child in the water.
THESE CLASSES DO NOT TEACH INFANTS TO SWIM.

Preschool Swimmers
4 and 5 year olds
Children must be four years old before the beginning of the session that they register for – NO Exceptions! Preschool-age children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming skills while increasing their comfort level in and around the water. As in all Swimming and Water Safety courses, your child will always know that it’s safety first.
Preschool Aquatics Level 1 (Pre1)

Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.

Preschoolers who pass Preschool Aquatics Level 3 may register for Learn to Swim Level 2 with Aquatics Supervisor Approval. They do not need to take Learn to Swim Level 1.
Learn to Swim
6 year olds and up
Learn-to-Swim courses are based on a logical, six-level progression that helps swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival, and swim skills.
Learn to Swim Level 1 (LTS1)

Introduction to water skills. Helps participants feel comfortable in the water.
Learn to Swim Level 2 (LTS2)

Fundamental Aquatic Skills. Gives participants success with fundamental skills.
Learn to Swim Level 3 (LTS3)

Stroke Development. Builds on the skills developed in LTS2 (level 2) through additional guided practice in deeper water.
Learn to Swim Level 4 (LTS4)

Private Swim Lessons
Fall Evening Private Lessons: Each session includes four (4) classes over a two (2) week period. Each class is 30 minutes. Times can be scheduled at 4:30 pm or 5:00 pm. See below for session dates.

Minimum age is 4 years old.
Children must swim at the same level to be registered together for the same private lessons. Class availabilty is limited. Early registration is recommended.

Lifeguard Training
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
WSI Training
Age: 15+
Prerequisites:
- Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills consistent with the Level 4 Stroke Performance Chart
- Front Crawl: 25 Yards
- Back Crawl: 25 Yards
- Breaststroke: 25 Yards
- Elementary Backstroke: 25 Yards
- Sidestroke: 25 Yards
- Butterfly: 25 Yards
- Maintain position on back for one (1) minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for one (1) minute

Step into Swim
Evanston Recreation Center is happy to announce we have received a grant from Step Into Swim, a nationwide initiative dedicated to creating safe swimmers. With this grant, we will be able to offer one free session of group swimming lessons per child during the summer.
